How to Hide VPN Usage From Your ISP (Stealth Mode)
In some countries and networks, using a VPN gets you blocked, throttled, or worse. Your ISP can see you're using a VPN even if they can't see what you're doing.
VPN obfuscation makes your VPN traffic look like regular HTTPS traffic. Here's how to enable it and which VPNs have the best stealth features.
How ISPs Detect VPNs
ISPs can identify VPN traffic through: known VPN server IPs, VPN protocol signatures (OpenVPN has a distinctive pattern), and deep packet inspection (DPI). Blocking any of these will stop your VPN from working.
Standard VPN connections are easy to detect. You need obfuscation to hide them.
Method #1: Enable Obfuscation
Obfuscated servers disguise VPN traffic as regular HTTPS traffic. In NordVPN, enable 'Obfuscated Servers'. In ExpressVPN, use the Lightway protocol with automatic settings. In Surfshark, enable 'NoBorders' mode.
Obfuscation is essential in China, UAE, Russia, and on restrictive networks like schools or workplaces.
Method #2: Use Port 443
Port 443 is used for HTTPS (secure web) traffic. VPN traffic on this port is harder to distinguish from normal browsing. In your VPN settings, change the port to 443 if available.
Method #3: Try Different Protocols
Some protocols are harder to detect than others. WireGuard is relatively new and some DPI systems don't recognize it yet. SSTP uses the same technology as HTTPS and is very hard to block.
Method #4: Shadowsocks / SOCKS5
Shadowsocks was designed specifically to bypass the Great Firewall of China. Some VPNs (like Surfshark) offer Shadowsocks servers. It's one of the most effective obfuscation methods.
Shadowsocks is technically a proxy, not a VPN, but when combined with a VPN it's very effective.
